    Deadlines near for State Bar officer, governor, and division officer candidates

    Would you like to become more involved in State Bar activities? Consider serving your colleagues and helping shape the profession as an officer, Board of Governors representative, or division officer.

    State Bar offices. The State Bar will elect a president-elect, treasurer, and Judicial Council representative. Interested members can submit their names to the Nominating Committee. The committee will choose two or more candidates for these offices and will announce its slate of candidates by Dec. 15. Members also can self nominate by submitting to the State Bar a petition signed by 100 active Bar members by Feb. 1.     Board of Governors petitions due in March. Districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 will elect governors in 2005. District 2 (Milwaukee County) will elect seven governors; District 9 (Dane County), three; and all other districts, one. The Board of Governors is the State Bar's policymaking body. Governors serve two-year terms.

    To be considered for a seat on the board, members must submit a petition signed by 10 active members in their district to the State Bar by March 1.

    Division elections. The State Bar's Government Lawyers (GLD), Nonresident Lawyers (NRLD), Senior Lawyers (SLD), and Young Lawyers (YLD) divisions are selecting candidates to run in their 2005 elections.

    GLD members will choose a president-elect, secretary, treasurer, and three division directors to serve two-year terms. Interested GLD members are invited to write to the GLD Nominating Committee in care of the State Bar by Feb. 1.

    NRLD members will choose a president-elect for a one-year term, and a secretary, treasurer, and five directors to serve two-year terms. Please note that only active- and emeritus-status NRLD members can run for these positions. Those interested in running are asked to send their resumes and letters of interest to NRLD Nominating Committee Chair in care of the State Bar by Jan. 14.

    The SLD is seeking members interested in serving in the following division positions: a president-elect for a one-year term, a secretary and three directors to serve two-year terms, and one director to serve a one-year term. Interested members are invited to write to the SLD Nominating Committee in care of the State Bar by Jan. 14.

    The YLD is seeking members interested in running for division president-elect in the 2005 election. Interested members are invited to write to the YLD Nominating Committee Chair in care of the State Bar by Feb. 1.

    YLD directors and other officers will be elected during the annual meeting in May, by nomination from the floor.

    Elections. Election ballots will be mailed by April 8 and must be returned by April 22. Those elected will take office July 1, 2005.
