The Young Lawyers Conference offers opportunities for networking. Here two young lawyers network at the 2023 conference.

Feb. 7, 2024 – As a young lawyer, you are your most valuable asset.

“To protect that asset, you need a community of other attorneys to support you,” says Samantha Baker, co-chair of the State Bar of Wisconsin's 14th annual Young Lawyers Conference (YLC), which offers “fun, food, and camaraderie” as well as CLE credits, all while learning about topics developed by Young Lawyers Division members to address common questions and concerns raised by young and new lawyers.

There is no registration fee for members of the State Bar of Wisconsin's Young Lawyers Division and for law students. It takes place March 8, 2024, in Madison.

It’s that camaraderie that is vital, according to Baker – and an important part of the YLC. “Networking is not just to get a new job,” she said. “It gives you someone else to talk to who knows what you’re going through or dealing with. And it offers a referral network to help boost your client list and skills. Knowing attorneys outside your firm is really important.”

“Attending the YLC is one way to start making those connections,” Baker said.

How? In addition to joining other young and new lawyers, “we have an amazing collection of attorneys, judges, and other professionals who will be in attendance this year,” said Baker. “They are very excited to present for our young lawyers and also really getting to know this next generation of attorneys.”

The goal is to get everyone interacting, “so the more people we have attend, the better,” she said.

    And the CLE sessions?

From topics on transactional matters, litigation strategies, AI ethical updates, and many opportunities to hear from and speak with members of the judiciary, “this year's conference is packed full to spark interest and provide value to all who attend,” said Megan Mirka, conference co-chair.

“The speakers and topics are particularly exciting this year, with so many experienced and diverse legal professionals speaking,” Mirka said.

What else should you know about the YLC?

“You’ll see other newer lawyers, get free tasty food, and many networking opportunities,” Mirka said. “You’ll meet attorneys from all over the state and in all types of practice areas. I look forward to seeing everyone spark new connections, learn new skills, and find new ways of looking at their practice from our speakers and colleagues.”
