Impostor Syndrome Has a Silver Lining

Impostor syndrome can actually be a good thing, says Maria Serbus, a stress management consult. How to rethink a lack of confidence.

Nov. 15, 2023 – Ever found yourself in a new role, suffering from a crippling lack of confidence?

Such bouts are known as impostor syndrome. Maria Serbus, a stress management consult who presented last month at the annual Wisconsin Solo and Small Firm Conference (WSSFC), said impostor syndrome can actually be a good thing.

“That’s the biggest misconception around it,” Serbus said. “When people experience self-doubt, they think, ‘Something’s wrong with me, I must not be doing something right,’ when that’s actually a sign that you’re growing, you’re leaping out of your comfort zone.”

Serbus said that mind-body wellness is critical to building self-confidence.

“You’ve got to do both, both the mind and the body.”
