July 18, 2018 – Gaining skills to succeed as a leader can be a challenge. It takes time to learn the skills leaders need, such as the most efficient ways to network and manage finances, to set an effective schedule, to practice speaking in public, and what it takes to perfect active listening skills.

The State Bar of Wisconsin’s G. Lane Ware Leadership Academy helps you do just that, according to its graduates, who completed the 2017-18 academy in April.

    Gaining Skills, Making Connections

The academy is a multisession training program – with three two-day sessions between November and April – that fosters leadership skills in Wisconsin lawyers.

“Not only did I obtain tools that I use often, I also obtained a greater sense of my own purpose and ability to succeed,” said Elizabeth Ruthmansdorfer of Milwaukee.

“The Leadership Academy gently pushed me to voluntarily step outside of my comfort zone,” said Jennifer Johnson of Milwaukee. “It helped increase my confidence and offered tips for successful networking.”

“Regardless of the situation you find yourself in, you will find yourself using what you learned in the Academy,” said Lance Leonhard of Wausau.

Whitney Ederer makes a comment during the April 2018 session of the Leadership Academy.

The academy helped Madison attorney Polly Schoemaker “recognize my own strengths and trust myself more as a lawyer and a leader,” she said.

An additional benefit: You gain a new network of like-minded lawyers. “Over the course of the academy, we found our similarities,” said Rhonda Frank-Loron of Madison. “We supported each other. We became resources, sources of referrals, and most importantly – friends.”

“You meet with a small group of committed professionals and learn the material together over a few sessions,” said Chad Lanning. “We all learned together, supported each other and graduated as a group committed to helping each other achieve their goals.”

The best part of the academy for Shoemaker was “being in a room full of people who all wanted to learn and grow in our personal and professional lives and lift each other up to meet our goals.”

“I now have a great group of people that I can reach out to if I have doubts or questions about anything,” Shoemaker said.
