Legal Action offers free training in exchange for pro bono services

Sept. 16, 2009 – Legal Action’s Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) presents its free 2009 Annual Fall Training CLE program in November for attorneys who commit to provide direct pro bono legal services to low-income clients in Legal Action’s 39-county service area.  The VLP offers a variety of opportunities for pro bono lawyers to help poor people protect the safety, stability and health of their families, maintain safe and affordable housing, and secure public benefits that will assure food, medical care and financial support.

The 2009 event will provide training in seven subject areas.  On Nov. 10-11, The VLP will cover bankruptcy, unemployment compensation, and family law topics, in Madison at the American Family Training Center.  On Nov. 17-19, the subjects will be consumer law, housing, elder law and Social Security Disability/SSI, in Pewaukee at Waukesha County Technical College.  Full- and half-day sessions begin at 8:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. offering more than 40 CLE credit hours.

In addition to these annual training programs which include comprehensive manuals with forms and sample documents, the VLP supports volunteer attorneys with ongoing technical support, professional liability insurance, litigation expense funds, case/client screening, scheduling flexibility and special pro bono projects.  Participating in the Volunteer Lawyers Project is an effective way for lawyers to meet their professional pro bono obligation and contribute to their communities.

Advance registration is required; registration closes at 5 p.m., Oct. 30, 2009.
