    FY02 Annual Report - President's Message

At the beginning of my term, I promised to bolster two existing initiatives - improve the image of the profession and enhance public trust and confidence in our justice system. Months later, the tragic events of September 11 rocked our country. Lawyers responded with real and tangible actions that furthered both goals.

    President's Message
    Responding to Crisis

Photo: Gerry MowrisAt the beginning of my term, I promised to bolster two existing initiatives - improve the image of the profession and enhance public trust and confidence in our justice system. Months later, the tragic events of September 11 rocked our country. Lawyers responded with real and tangible actions that furthered both goals.

    • Hundreds of Wisconsin lawyers volunteered to provide pro bono legal assistance to military personnel who were called to serve our country in our battle against terrorism.
    • Lawyers volunteered to help field questions and assist those who are being investigated by the FBI and INS as those agencies investigate terrorism here in Wisconsin.
    • Lawyers helped the public understand the critical need to balance civil liberties with public safety by participating in public discussions and debates in the community and in schools.

As lawyers, we can help our image and promote confidence in our system by showing citizens that we care. Our volunteer efforts went miles in earning the public's trust and confidence. Let us not wait for crisis to strike again. We must continue our efforts to serve the community - in good times and in bad.
