Can't represent that prospective client? Refer them to Lawyer Referral Information Service

What do you do when a prospective client contacts you regarding an area of law that is not your forté? Or the issue falls in your practice area, but the case would be too time consuming for your busy schedule? Whatever the reason, you know that taking on this case is just not an option.

Nearly every experienced lawyer or established law office can relate to these scenarios. What can you do?

Consider referring these people to the State Bar's Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS), where they will speak with trained legal assistants who will help narrow down their issues and find a lawyer to help them if needed. LRIS makes fee-based referrals to attorneys who have agreed to speak with individuals about their chosen practice areas. When callers are looking for government or community resources, do not have the resources to pay attorney fees, or only need answers to simple legal questions, LRIS staff will guide them to appropriate programs and organizations.

The next time you find yourself across the desk or on the phone with a potential client who you cannot represent, think about LRIS.

For more information about LRIS or to join, contact the State Bar at (800) 444-9404, ext. 6131, or visit www.wisbar.org/lris. Membership is $79 for the remainder of the referral year, through June 30, 2008.
