    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Patrick FiedlerKevin TrostThe Hon. Patrick Fiedler, Marquette 1980, and Kevin Trost, U.W. 1998, have joined Axley Law Firm’s downtown Madison office. Fiedler, previously a Dane County Circuit Court judge, focuses on tort, construction, business, and family law mediation and arbitration. Trost, previously with a creditors’ rights law firm, represents financial institutions and insurers.

    Tammy Skoglund, Hamline 2001 cum laude, and Siv Yurichuk, William Mitchell 2005, have joined Bakke Norman Law Offices, Baldwin, Menomonie, and New Richmond. Skoglund focuses on business counseling and general, commercial, and business litigation. Yurichuk focuses on criminal defense and family law.

     

    Reed L. Christiansen, U.W. 2008, has joined Carestream Health Inc., Oakdale, Minn., and focuses on patent matters for the company’s medical films and printing solutions business.

    Mark Daspit, Creighton 1997, has joined DDR Corp., Beachwood, Ohio, as senior legal counsel in the legal-leasing department.

    Michael T. Flynn, Marquette 1999, has been appointed director of litigation at Joy Global Inc., a Milwaukee-based equipment manufacturer and parts and services provider for mining industries. He previously was with CNH America LLC.

    Ten attorneys have joined the Wisconsin offices of Godfrey & Kahn S.C. New associates in the Madison office are Dustin B. Brown, New York Univ. 2007 magna cum laude, litigation; Martina R.     Jennifer J. Hennessy

    Jennifer J. Hennessy, Iowa 2011 with distinction, has joined the Madison office of Quarles & Brady LLP as an associate in the health law group.

     

    Marney Hoefer, U.W. 2000 cum laude, has joined Stafford Rosenbaum LLP as a senior associate and focuses on environmental law and governmental affairs. She previously worked for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

    William A. Jennaro, Marquette 1968, has joined Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown LLP, Milwaukee, in of-counsel capacity and focuses on mediation and arbitration, family, white-collar criminal defense, personal injury, wrongful death, admiralty, real estate, and gaming and dealership law. He previously was with Cook & Franke S.C. and also has been a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge.

    Jodi E. Jensen, U.W. 1995, has joined the Madison office of DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. and focuses on governmental relations, administrative law, and campaign finance and elections law. She previously was with the Wisconsin Department of Administration.

    Nathan Johnson

    Nathan Johnson, U.W. 2010, has joined the Madison office of Constangy, Brooks & Smith LLP as an associate and focuses on employment law litigation and business litigation.

     

    Shana R. Lewis, U.W. 1999 cum laude, has joined the Madison office of Davis & Kuelthau s.c. in the labor and employment law practice, representing public and private sector employers. She previously was with Lathrop & Clark, Madison.

    Robert J. Lightfoot II

    Robert J. Lightfoot II, Hamline 1995, has joined the Madison office of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. as a partner in the health-care practice and focuses on representing nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.

     

    Jens Loberg, Hamline 2011, has joined his father, Robert, and brother, Lars, at Loberg Law Office, Ellsworth.

    Erik J. McFarland, Hamline 2011 cum laude, has joined the John Jokela Law Office, Wausau, and focuses on worker’s compensation and Social Security disability law. [Editor’s note: Mr. McFarland’s name was misspelled in the November “In the News.”]

    Danielle M. Bergner

    Three attorneys have joined Michael Best & Friedrich LLP. Danielle M. Bergner, Marquette 2005, is an associate in the transactional practice in the Milwaukee office and focuses on real estate, municipal law, and finance. She previously was a Milwaukee assistant city attorney. Albert Bianchi Jr., Marquette 2007 magna cum laude, is with the intellectual property practice in the Madison office. He previously clerked for a federal district court judge. James M. Schleicher, Michigan 2011, is with the intellectual property practice and the life sciences team in the Milwaukee office.

     

    Sean K. Murphy, U.W. 1999, has become corporate counsel for Lab126, part of the Amazon.com group in Cupertino, Cal. He previously was with Nokia Inc., White Plains, N.Y.

    Eric C. Pease, Montana 2003, has joined the Law Offices of James L. Bartells, with offices in Wausau and Eagle River, and concentrates on worker’s compensation, Social Security, and personal injury matters. He previously practiced with Piehler & Strande.

    James K. Pease Jr

    James K. Pease Jr., U.W. 1966, has joined Constangy, Brooks & Smith LLP as of counsel in the Madison office and focuses in employer-side labor relations.

     

    Todd R. Seelman, Hamline 1990, has joined the Denver office of Ford & Harrison LLP as a partner and continues to focus in antitrust, unfair competition, noncompetition agreements, and trade-secret protection. He also is president-elect of the State Bar Nonresident Lawyers Division.

    Brian Thill, Marquette 2003, has been named a shareholder at the Madison office of Murphy Desmond S.C. and continues to focus on creditor/debtor law, bankruptcy, and other business matters.

    B.T. Thomas, U.W. 2000, has been promoted to senior counsel in the legal department of BMO Institutional Services, Madison.

     

    Wendy Ward, U.W. 2001, has rejoined the Madison office of Merchant & Gould in the generic pharmaceuticals practice area. She previously was with Paddock Laboratories.

    Keith D. Lindenbaum, Michigan 1994, and Todd A. Rathe, Iowa 1992, have formed Rathe Lindenbaum LLP, 10335 N. Port Washington Rd., Suite 180, Mequon, and focus on intellectual property matters.

    Ratzel & Associates LLC, a Wisconsin insurance defense firm, has opened an office at 1000 Nevada Way, Suite 102, Boulder City, Nevada.

    Lena Taylor, Southern Illinois 1993, has opened a new law office, Lena Taylor and Associates, 2611 W. State St., Milwaukee, which focuses on plaintiffs’ personal injury matters. She also is a member of the Wisconsin State Senate.

    Eido Walny, Boston Univ. 2001, has formed the Walny Legal Group (walnylegal.com) and focuses in estate planning, asset protection, business succession, and business law.

    Appointments, Elections

    Danielle L. Carne, Iowa 2002, has been named a fellow in the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section Government Fellowship Program. She is an arbitrator, mediator, and hearing examiner with the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission, Madison.

    Kyle Flanagan

    Kyle B. Flanagan, U.W. 2010, has been named to the board of the Wausau chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. He is a member of the business transactions practice in the Wausau office of Ruder Ware L.L.S.C.

     

    Patrick D. McNally, Marquette 2002, has been named the 2011-12 lead state chair for the Council on Litigation Management. He is a shareholder and director in the Milwaukee office of Borgelt, Powell, Peterson & Frauen S.C.

    Charles P. Stevens, Marquette 1981, has been elected to the board of the Wellness Council of Wisconsin. He is a partner in the Milwaukee office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP and focuses on employee benefits law.

    Authors, Speakers

    Michael Ariens, Marquette 1982, has authored Lone Star Law: A Legal History of Texas (Lubbock, TX: Texas Tech. Univ. Press, 2011). He is a professor at St. Mary’s University School of Law, San Antonio, Texas.

    Kevin B. Cronin, U.W. 1970, on behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development, presented a program titled “Best Practices in Renewable Energy: Policy Incentives and Enabling Environment” in Amman, Jordan.

    Thomas Domer, U.W. 1983, presented “Worker’s Compensation Ethics Scenarios” at the Workers’ Injury Law and Advocates Group 2011 national conference in San Diego. He represents injured workers at Domer Law, Milwaukee.

    Aaron R Gary

    Aaron R. Gary, California-Davis 1992, has authored Alcohol Beverages Regulation in Wisconsin (State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE 2011). He is an attorney at the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau.

     

    The Hon. Charles B. Schudson, U.W. 1974, presented a four-week course on juvenile criminal justice to students in the L.L.M. program at Justus-Liebig Universitat, Giessen, Germany. He is a Wisconsin reserve judge emeritus and a Fulbright scholar.

    Bill Weigel, Marquette 1984, received a fellowship from the National Institute for Teaching Ethics and Professionalism to speak about teaching law students about lawyer discipline. He is litigation counsel for the Office of Lawyer Regulation, Madison.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Julianna Ebert

    Julianna Ebert, Marquette 1981, received the Frederick O. Kiel Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Bond Lawyers at a ceremony in San Antonio in October. She is a senior partner in the public finance group of Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee.

     

    John H. Fischer II

    John H. Fisher II, U.W. 1985, has obtained certification in health-care compliance from the Health Care Compliance Association, a national organization. He focuses on health-care law at Ruder Ware L.L.S.C., Wausau.

     

    Roberta Ann Heckes, Marquette 1999, received the 2011 John Lederer Service Award from the State Bar Solo, Small Firm, and General Practice Section at the group’s annual conference in the Wisconsin Dells in October. She is a solo practitioner working throughout eastern Wisconsin and was honored for helping other lawyers improve their practices and mentoring lawyers new to criminal law work.

    Todd Korb

    Todd Korb, U.W. 1996, has obtained national board certification in civil trial advocacy and also has been named a National Trial Lawyers Association top 100 trial lawyer for Wisconsin. He practices plaintiffs’ personal injury law at Hupy and Abraham S.C., Milwaukee.

     

    The Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP received the 2011 Wisconsin Organizational Philanthropy Award from the Greater Milwaukee chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

    Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. received an honorable mention award for 2011 Waukesha County Executive Business of the Year.

    Charles “Chuttie” Senn, U.W. 1980, and three colleagues received the Administrator’s Innovation Award from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for their work implementing an expedited debris removal program after the May 22, 2011, tornadoes in Missouri. Senn is a deployable field counsel for FEMA.

    von Briesen & Roper s.c. received the 2011 International Legal Technology Association’s (ILTA) Emerging Technology Champion Award at the ILTA annual conference in Nashville. The award recognized the firm’s use of emerging technology in redesigning its intranet.

    Pro Bono, Public Service

    Michael F. Hupy, Marquette 1972, received a commendation from the California State Senate for his service to the Wounded Warrior Project. He is with Hupy and Abraham S.C., Milwaukee.

    The Milwaukee Bar Association recognized outstanding pro bono work at its annual State of the Court Luncheon in October. Kristine L. Havlik, Virginia 1999, received the individual award for her work with the Wisconsin Wills for Heroes program. She focuses on trusts and estates work at Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee. The Catholic Charities Legal Services for Immigrants program received the organizational award. The program is led by Barbara Graham, Marquette 1993, and carried out by three full-time attorneys, certified paralegals, law students, and dozens of volunteer attorneys.
