    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Three attorneys have joined the Brookfield office of Blommer Peterman S.C. Mark J. Andres, Marquette 2001, focuses on estate planning, estate and trust administration, and elder law with the firm’s new estate planning practice. Dustin A. McMahon, Michigan State 2011, and Matthew V. Plummer, Marquette 2011, have joined the default-services practice.

    Anza D’Antonio, Temple 2001, has joined A.O. Smith, Milwaukee, as assistant general counsel.

    Thomas J. Drought, U.W. 1959, has joined the Milwaukee office of Davis & Kuelthau s.c. in of-counsel capacity with the trusts, estates, and succession planning group. He previously was with Cook & Franke S.C.

    Crystal H. Fieber, Missouri 2006, has been named a partner at Hopp Neumann Humke LLP, Sheboygan, and continues to focus on municipal, business, employment, and immigration matters.

    David J. Hase, U.W. 1965 with honors, has joined the Brookfield office of DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. in the litigation group and focuses on business litigation, securities, and regulatory matters.

    Patrick G. Heaney, St. Thomas 2008, has been promoted to shareholder at Thrasher, Pelish & Franti Ltd., Rice Lake, and continues to focus on tort litigation and construction law. The firm now will be known as Thrasher, Pelish, Franti & Heaney Ltd.

    Jim Johnson, Marquette 2005, has joined the Washington, D.C., office of Hogan Lovells US LLP and practices in the FDA/pharmaceutical and biotechnology group. He previously was with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Office of the Chief Counsel, Silver Spring, Maryland.

    Jonathan R. Eiden, U.W. 2010 cum laude, and Gina M. Vollmer, Marquette 2009, have joined the Appleton office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. Eiden is with the defense litigation group. Vollmer is with the commercial transactions group and previously worked at DiRenzo & Bomier LLC, Neenah.

    Katherine A. Kuchan, Marquette 2001 magna cum laude, has been named a shareholder in the Milwaukee office of Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman. She also is a registered nurse and focuses on health-care law regulatory and compliance matters.

    Ashley Richter, U.W. 2010, has joined the newly renamed Relles, Milliken & Scheffer LLP (formerly Relles, Long & Milliken LLP), Madison, and focuses on family law, guardianship, estate planning, and probate.

    Tamara Skoglund, Hamline 2001, has joined the tax and business law team at Bakke Norman S.C., with offices in Baldwin, Menomonie, and New Richmond. She previously was with Schober, Schober & Mitchell S.C., New Berlin.

    Michelle Swardenski, Colorado 2006, has joined DiRenzo & Bomier LLC, Neenah, and focuses on family law, guardian ad litem, real estate, and general civil litigation and appeals.

    Four attorneys have been promoted to shareholder at von Briesen & Roper s.c. Kraig A. Byron, Wyoming 1992 with honors, is with the litigation and risk management group in the Madison office. Steven G. Carlson, U.W. 2004, and Gottlieb John Marmet, U.W. 2004, are with the litigation and risk management group in the Milwaukee office. Kyle J. Gulya, U.W. 2004 cum laude, is with the labor and employment law and school law sections in the Madison office.

    Sara Ward-Cassady, Marquette 1998, has been appointed deputy director of state courts for the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s Office of Court Operations, Madison. She previously was the circuit court policy and procedures advisor.

    Richard White, U.W. 1982, has joined Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci S.C., Eau Claire, and focuses on white-collar criminal defense. He previously was Eau Claire County district attorney.

    Mergers, Relocations, New Offices

    James Casey, Dayton 1988, has been elected to the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership board, located within the National Academies, Washington, D.C. He is executive director of the Office of Grants, Contracts, and Industrial Agreements at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

    Bonnie Abramoff, Marquette 1985, and Rebecca Oettinger, U.W. 2007, have been elected to the board of the Collaborative Family Law Council of Wisconsin. Abramoff is with Abramoff Law Office, Germantown. Oettinger is with Boardman Quale Hartmann, Baraboo. Christie Brooks, U.W. 1977, was a corecipient of the council’s annual membership award. She is with von Briesen & Roper s.c., Milwaukee.

    David J. Farley, Marquette 1984, has been named managing partner of the Madison office of Borgelt, Powell, Peterson & Frauen S.C. He focuses on civil litigation.

    Fred Foreman, John Marshall 1974, has been elected chief judge of the Illinois 19th Judicial Circuit, Lake County, Ill.

    Jonathan   W. HackbarthJonathan W. Hackbarth, U.W. 2008 cum laude, has been appointed to serve on the Milwaukee Standards and Appeals Commission. He is an associate with the Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP and focuses on general civil and commercial litigation.

    Daniel G. Radler, Marquette 1997 cum laude, has been named chair of the national intellectual property practice at Quarles & Brady LLP. He is a partner in the Milwaukee office and focuses on patent procurement and licensing.

    James L. Santelle, Chicago 1983, has been appointed to the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. He is U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

    Authors, Speakers

    Christie A. Linskens Christie, Marquette 1987 cum laude, authored “What Critiques Have Been Made of the Socratic Method in Legal Education?,” which appeared in volume 12, issues 3 and 4, of the European Journal of Law Reform. She is a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee and an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School and Moraine Park Technical College.

    Terry F. Peppard, U.W. 1973, has authored the revised edition of Arbitration and Mediation of Business Disputes (State Bar PINNACLE, 2d ed. 2012), part of the Wisconsin Business Advisor series. He is with the Law Office of Terry Peppard, Madison.

    The Hon. Charles B. Schudson, U.W. 1974, presented two programs at the New Jersey Judicial College in November 2011, titled “Marriage and the New American Family” and “Marriage, Murder, Isolation and Judging.”

    Eric W.   AndersonEric W. Anderson, U.W. 1986, has been elected for induction as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He is a partner with Parker, Hudson, Rainer & Dobbs LLP, Atlanta.

    Amy E.   ArndtAmy E. Arndt, U.W. 2007, has become a Black Duck Certified Legal Specialist. The certification program provides training in the methodology of open-source-software audits. She is with the business law, international, and tax practices and the software, technology and licensing team at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., Milwaukee.

    Constangy, Brooks & Smith LLP, which has offices in Madison and nationwide, has earned the 2011 WILEF Gold Standard Certification from the Women in Law Empowerment Forum. The certification is awarded to firms in which women occupy a significant percentage of leadership roles.

    Brad Dallet, Case Western Reserve 1994 cum laude, received the 2011 CARW Affiliate of the Year award from the Commercial Association of Realtors Wisconsin. He is a shareholder in the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C. and chair of the real estate group.

    John W. Daniels Jr., Harvard 1974, received a Spirit of Excellence Award from the American Bar Association, in recognition of his efforts and accomplishments in pursuit of a more racially and ethnically diverse legal profession. He is chair of Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee, and focuses on real estate law.

    Foley & Lardner LLP was named “Best of the Best” in the BTI Consulting Group’s Client Service A-Team Report for its commitment to help clients.

    Kimberly A. Hurtado, Marquette 1987, has earned a CM-BIM accreditation from the Associated General Contractors of America’s building information modeling education program. She is with Hurtado S.C., Counselors at Law, Wauwatosa, which focuses exclusively on construction, real estate, and public finance law.

    Theresa Laughlin, U.W. 1995, and Brenda K. Sunby, John Marshall 1998, have earned certification as Civil Trial Specialists, an achievement conferred by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. They practice in the Wausau, Stevens Point, and Rhinelander offices of Habush Habush & Rottier S.C.

    Daniel R. Humble, Marquette 2000, received a commendation medal from the government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Kyrgyz prosecutor general for his work advancing the rule of law and legal sector reform in the Kyrgyz Republic. He is employed by the U.S. Department of Justice as the republic’s resident legal advisor.

    Jonathan Levy, U.W. 1995, has been selected for membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is a shareholder with Rosenthal, Levy & Simon P.A., West Palm Beach, Fla., and focuses on litigation.

    Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. has been named a partner in best practices for office paper management by the American Bar Association, for implementing best management practices in use of recycled content, recycling of discarded mixed office paper, and adoption of paper-conserving print and copy measures.

    Pro Bono, Public Service

    The staff of Axley Brynelson LLP, Madison, donated toys, cash, and hours of volunteer work to the U.S. Marine Toys for Tots program.

    Godfrey & Kahn S.C. recently announced its 2011 Fellowship in Law recipients. The program, designed to promote diversity within Wisconsin’s law schools, provides a full, three-year scholarship to one student at the U.W. Law School and one student at Marquette University Law School.

    Retirements

    The Hon. Tim A. Duket, U.W. 1979, and the Hon. Frederic W. Fleishauer, U.W. 1973, recently retired from the bench. Duket retired from the Marinette County Circuit Court. Fleishauer retired from the Portage County Circuit Court.
