Roy E. Wagner, Marquette 1978, and Terry F. Peppard, U.W. 1973, are the 2008 recipients of the Hon. Charles Dunn Author Award, presented annually by the State Bar Communications Committee.

They are being honored for their article “Mediating Complex Construction Claims Cases” (June 2008). In selecting their article, the Dunn award subcommittee said: “This article took what can be a very complex issue and addressed and organized all of the various facets of construction disputes in a very easy-to-read, understandable way.”

Wagner practices with von Briesen & Roper s.c., Milwaukee, chairing the firm’s Construction Law Section. He concentrates his practice in construction law counseling and related claims litigation. He is also a mediator and arbitrator in construction cases and chairs the State Bar Construction and Public Contracts Law Section. Peppard is a commercial and construction claims arbitrator and mediator with offices in Madison. He is past chair of the State Bar Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and author of Arbitration and Mediation of Business Disputes, published by State Bar CLE Books. He also teaches negotiation and mediation at the U.W. Law School.

The Dunn award, named after Wisconsin’s first chief justice, recognizes writing excellence in Wisconsin Lawyer articles. The award will be presented at the Volunteer Lawyers Recognition program, held during the State Bar’s Annual Convention, on May 6, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., in Milwaukee.

The following attorneys also received certificates of commendation for articles printed in the Wisconsin Lawyer in 2008: Mark F. Foley, Michigan 1981, helped lawyers understand the many regulatory issues businesses face when engaging in Internet commerce, in “The FTC’s Web Site Privacy and Security Rules for Every Business” (March 2008). He is a partner at Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee. Matthew L. Mac Kelly, Marquette 2001, comprehensively summarized the issues lawyers must know and consider when counseling their business clients about employment references, in “Employer Liability for Employment References” (April 2008). He is an associate of Cross Law Firm S.C., Milwaukee. John E. Murray, Iowa 1991, expertly navigated readers through Congressional changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act, in “The ADA Amendments Act of 2008: Redefining Who is Disabled” (Dec. 2008). He is a shareholder with Simandl & Murray S.C., Waukesha.
