TroupisMadison winters aren't cold enough for attorney Jim Troupis so he is heading to Siberia. Troupis of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP will teach the rule of law and litigation in the American legal system to law students at Baikal State University of Economics & Law in Irkutsk, Russia, from mid April to early May.

"I will use American films and the traditional American law school Socratic case method - both very different from the lecture system of Russian universities," says Troupis. "While the students learn English as part of their law school curriculum, it is as a second language, and I am guessing communication will be a challenge. I hope to circumvent that a bit. All films will have subtitles and my outlines will be translated into Russian."

Troupis is traveling for the Center for International Legal Studies, a non-profit research, training, and law publications institute. Based in Salzburg, Austria since 1976, CILS promotes the dissemination of information among members of the international legal community.

"This is true `missionary work for lawyers,' to have an opportunity to spread the principles of the Rule of Law," says Troupis. He invites State Bar members to visit WisBar.org to read his daily blog where he will chronicle his adventures. Troupis' blog, fromrussiawithlaw.blogspot.com, will be available beginning the week of April 7.
