700 Wisconsin attorneys and judges expected to attend legal
convention this week
Madison, June 23, 1998 - The State Bar of
Wisconsin's Annual Summer Convention is scheduled for this week in Lake
Geneva at the Grand Geneva Resort. Convention activities are scheduled
Wednesday, June 24 through Friday, June 26.
The convention will include the following programs and events:
Wednesday, June 24
Gavel Awards Luncheon
- Awards given to television, radio and newspaper journalists for
law-related stories during 1997.
Thursday, June 25
Technology Expo
- Gives convention attendees hands-on experience with legal research
on the internet and state-of-the-art technology tools.
Balancing Life and Practice Seminars
- Attorneys can participate in a program dealing with balancing the
pressures of everyday practice and a healthy, satisfying personal
life.
Management of a Law Office
- Reviewing goals, existing marketing tools, using technology and
innovative legal marketing for lawyers
Guest Speaker: Linda Sedloff Orton, Intelligent
Marketing Services, Inc., New York City
President's Luncheon
- Madison Attorney Susan Steingass will be sworn in as the State Bar's
43rd President. Speakers include Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice
Shirley Abrahamson.
- State Bar Lifetime Jurist Achievement Award presented to Hon. John
A. Decker of Milwaukee.
Civil Litigation
- Guest Speaker: Jonathan Harr, author of the
best-selling novel A Civil Action, a true story
chronicling the efforts of several mothers and their lawyers to hold
industrial polluters responsible for the cancer deaths of their
children. Made into a soon-to-be-released movie starring John Travolta
and Robert Duvall.
Labor and Employment Law
Legal Issues Associated With Wisconsin's "W-2" program
Speaker - Howard Bernstein, Wisconsin Department
of Workforce Development.
Pro Bono Awards
- Legal Action of Wisconsin presenting five public service awards
Friday, June 26
"The Holocaust: Its Relevance for Today"
- Presented by New Richmond attorney Timothy J. Scott. Discussion of
the Holocaust and the detrimental effects of racism in today's
society.
Stress Management for Lawyers
Speaker - Don Jones, Director of the Texas
Lawyers' Assistance Program.
Confidentiality of School Records as Affected by the Juvenile Justice
