Elementary Schools Join PEACE Program to Reduce Youth Violence

MADISON, August 6, 2001 - Back to school for 16 elementary schools statewide will include learning peer mediation techniques. For the sixth consecutive year, the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Department of Justice have teamed up to reduce violence in Wisconsin elementary school by teaching children communication and problem solving skills as part of the PEACE (Peers in Education Addressing Conflict Effectively) program.

This year, more than 80 teachers, school counselors, principals and parents from 15 elementary schools will be participating in the intensive two-day PEACE training on August 8-9 in Madison. Participants will learn about peer mediation and how to instruct students in it. The PEACE program is just one way Wisconsin lawyers provide legal solutions and service to the public.

PEACE training will be kicked off with a luncheon at the American Family Complex, 6000 American Parkway, at noon on Wednesday, August 8th. Featured speakers include Attorney General Jim Doyle, Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster and Attorney Michelle Behnke - chair of the State Bar's Board of Governors. Several Wisconsin Supreme Court justices and state legislators will also be in attendance.

Nearly 25,000 students in approximately 50 Wisconsin elementary schools currently participate in the PEACE program. For more information on PEACE or other law-related education programs, contact Dee Runaas at (608) 250-6191, or visit the State Bar's Web site - www.legalexplorer.com/education
