High School Mock Trial Tournament Finalists announced
MADISON, March 13, 2006 -- For the 7th consecutive
year a team of students from Rhinelander High School is taking the state
mock trial title back to Rhinelander. The team beat Xavier High School
of Appleton to win the State Bar of Wisconsin's 23rd Annual Mock Trial
competition and will represent Wisconsin at the national finals May
12-13 in Oklahoma City.
"Rhinelander has placed first in 12 of the last 18 years of the
competition," notes Dee Runaas, State Bar of Wisconsin Law-related
Education Coordinator. "The growth and success of this program in
Wisconsin is incredible. We went from 85 teams in 1983 to over 130 in
this year's program. The mock trial program is the most highly visible
public service project the Bar has to offer."
The competition, sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin and funded
with grants from the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation, Wisconsin Law
Foundation and Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies, began with over
170 schools participating when school started in September. Teams
receive case materials in October, attend a training session in January
and participate in regional competitions in February. Regional winners
advance to the state competition in mid March. The tournament culminates
in May with Wisconsin's winner competing at the 2005 national
championship in Oklahoma City.
The State Bar of Wisconsin is the mandatory professional
association, created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for attorneys who
hold a Wisconsin law license. With more than 20,000 members, the State
Bar aids the courts in improving the administration of justice, provides
continuing legal education for its members to help them maintain their
expertise, and assists Wisconsin lawyers in carrying out community
service initiatives to educate the public about the legal system and the
value of lawyers.
