    Have Your Say: Vote by April 22 in State Bar Elections

    Voting in the State Bar of Wisconsin elections gives you a chance to have a say in setting the direction and policies of the State Bar. Here’s what you need to know to cast your vote.

    April 6, 2016 – This month, State Bar members will elect a president-elect, a secretary, a Judicial Council representative, district governors, and division officers and board members. For State Bar officers and district governors, ballots were mailed the week of March 28, and are due by April 22.

    The winning candidates will assume their office July 1. For general information on State Bar elections, see the elections page on WisBar.org.

    Elect a President-elect, Secretary, and Judicial Council Representative

    The State Bar’s officers influence the future of the State Bar as well as set its policy direction. Your vote for officers will make a difference in the future of the organization that supports the practice of law in Wisconsin.

    Officer positions up for election are president-elect, secretary, and Judicial Council representative.

    The 2016-17 officer candidates are:

    The president-elect serves a one-year term before becoming president. The secretary holds the position for two years, while the Judicial Council representative serves a three-year term.

    Candidates for State Bar Board of Governors – 16 Governor Positions Open for Election

    You have a say in who will represent your district on the State Bar Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is the State Bar's policymaking body. Governors serve two-year terms.

    The Board of Governors’ candidates represent a wide variety of experience and practice areas. By district, the candidates are:

    Division Elections: Government, Nonresident, and Young Lawyers Divisions

    The State Bar divisions promote greater communication, networking, and business opportunities among member lawyers with similar interests and experience. The board members of each division set the tone for each division, send representatives to the State Bar’s Board of Governors, and produce the division’s newsletter. For the Government, Nonresident and Young Lawyers divisions, membership is free if you qualify.

    This spring, the division elections will be conducted via email for the Nonresident, Government and Young Lawyers divisions. On April 6, ballots will be sent via email to members with email addresses on file with the State Bar. They are due no later than April 22.

    Paper and Electronic Ballot Information

    Please remember:

    • Only State Bar divisions are handling elections electronically. If you do not open your mail, alert your assistant not to discard your State Bar of Wisconsin paper ballot for president-elect, secretary, Board of Governors and Judicial Council offices. It is clearly marked “BALLOT” on the outside of the envelope.

    • Add noreply@directvote.net as an approved sender in your inbox today. This prevents the ballot from being identified as spam.

    • If you belong to more than one division, the email you receive will contain all of the ballots and candidate statements for any division in which you are eligible to vote.

    • If you have placed any holds on email from the State Bar, you may not receive an electronic ballot. You might want to phone Customer Service to verify that your account is set up to receive your email ballot. They can be reached at (800) 728-7788.
