    Leaders Needed: Run for a 2017 State Bar Leadership Position

    Are you a leader? Or do you wish you were one? Now’s your chance to gain leadership experience – run for a 2017 State Bar officer or Board of Governors position.

    Oct 19, 2016 – Member volunteers are the driving force behind State Bar of Wisconsin programs and initiatives.

    Leaders of all experience levels are welcome and needed – and when you get involved, you help shape the future of your Bar and your profession.

    Please consider contributing your time and expertise as an officer or Board of Governors representative.

    The members of the Nomination Committee, appointed by State Bar President Fran Deisinger for the State Bar’s April 2017 election cycle and approved at the Sept. 16-17 Board of Governors meeting, are: State Bar President-elect Paul Swanson (chair, Oshkosh), Dist. 8 Gov. Deanne Koll (Menomonie), attorneys Laura Skilton Verhoff (Madison), Thomas Schwaba (Marinette), and Steven DeVougas (Milwaukee). The committee nominates members to run for the State Bar leadership positions.

    Candidates are needed for these positions:

    State Bar Officers

    The State Bar will elect a president-elect, a treasurer, and a Judicial Council representative in 2017. Members wishing to be considered for one of these offices should send a letter of interest before Nov. 28, 2016, to Jan Marks. Letters can be mailed to Jan Marks, State Bar of Wisconsin, P.O. Box 7158, Madison, WI 53707-7158.

    The State Bar Nomination Committee will announce its slate of candidates by Dec. 15.

    State Bar members also can make officer nominations by filing a petition signed by 100 active State Bar members. Nominations should be sent to Jan Marks by Feb. 1, 2017. For an officer petition, contact Jan Marks at (608) 250-6106, or (800) 444-9404, ext. 6106.

    Board of Governors

    The Board of Governors is the State Bar's policymaking body. Governors serve two-year terms.

    Districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 will elect governors in 2017. District 2 (Milwaukee) elects seven; District 9 (Dane) elects three; and all other districts elect one.

    To be considered for a seat on the Board of Governors, members must submit a petition to the State Bar by March 1, 2017, that is signed by 10 active members in their district.

    State Bar election ballots will be mailed no later than April 14, 2017, and must be returned by April 28, 2017.

    Persons elected will take office July 1, 2017.
