April 10, 2013 – The State Bar of Wisconsin shares the state Supreme Court’s concern that the proposed reduction in the court’s budget in the 2013-15 state budget bill could have a detrimental impact on the state’s justice system.

“The State Bar of Wisconsin believes that adequate funding is of critical importance to provide a system of justice which is fairly administered and impartial to all people, regardless of financial circumstance,” said State Bar of Wisconsin President Kevin Klein.

The Bar would like to work with legislators and the administration to ensure that the court system is provided the resources necessary to carry out its constitutional and statutory obligations.

“Wisconsin Courts have constitutional functions and obligations that require funding at a level sufficient to meet those responsibilities,” added Klein.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court contends that if left uncorrected a $17 million lapse would represent the largest cut ever to the court system’s budget and would affect its county financial partners and the services it is able to provide online and at courthouses throughout the state.

Case delays, collections reduction, information technology development freezes and decreased court administration are just a few of the many expected repercussions of the lapse.
