Get the Latest Law on Juvenile Law, Parental Rights, and Adoption, from State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE

Let the newly updated State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE® Wisconsin Juvenile Law Handbook and Voluntary Termination of Parental Rights and Adoption be your practical guides to juvenile law, voluntary termination of parental rights, and adoption.

March 6, 2013 – In January 2013, State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE released its supplement to the Wisconsin Juvenile Law Handbook – available both in print and via Books UnBound®, again updated by authors from the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office.

Navigate Through Each Phase of the Juvenile Court Process

The Wisconsin Juvenile Law Handbook, which focuses on issues unique to juvenile cases, is indispensable for attorneys practicing in Wisconsin’s juvenile courts. The book opens with a discussion of the rights and roles of various parties in juvenile court, including initial considerations of jurisdiction and venue. Subsequent chapters cover the prehearing, hearing, and postdispositional phases of a juvenile case. Other chapters examine criteria for holding a child or expectant mother in custody, the process for filing a petition, conduct of discovery and motion practice, and dispositional alternatives. The book includes sample practice forms, accessible on a CD-ROM (for print-book purchasers) or online (for Books UnBound subscribers). It also points readers to pertinent standard juvenile court forms.

Learn About Key Topics, Updated for 2013

The handbook devotes separate chapters to specific subjects: waiver into adult court; confidentiality; contempt and juvenile sanctions; TPR; parental consent for a minor’s abortion; and the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA). This latest supplement incorporates various recent legal developments affecting juvenile law, including legislation affecting the confidentiality of juvenile court records and permanency planning for children placed in out-of-home care. Recent appellate court decisions are also discussed. Authors of this 2013 Juvenile Law Handbook update are Milton Childs, Benjamin Gonring, Kathryn Holtz, Eileen Huie, Margaret Johnson, Devon Lee, Leigh Neville-Neil, Gina Pruski, Diane Rondini-Harness, Paris Scott, and Mary Wolfe.

    Updated TPR Guide Also Available

Attorneys faced with adoption issues need PINNACLE’s Voluntary Termination of Parental Rights and Adoption, written by Judith Sperling-Newton and updated by PINNACLE in 2012. This handbook, available both in print and online, is a step-by-step guide to assisting birth parents and prospective adoptive parents, with a particular focus on ensuring that birth parents understand their rights during the process and the rights they give up by breaking legal ties with their children. The book contains an overview of the Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) and adoption processes and provides questions the attorney should ask to ensure that the client’s consent to the process is completely informed and voluntary and that the record will withstand an appeal. The supplement incorporates recent legal developments, including the Wisconsin Indian Child Welfare Act and the applicability, in the United States, of the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption.
