Professor Mark Yochum, a nationally recognized speaker on issues of professional responsibility, will present “The Bonehead Play” at the Real Estate and Business Law Institute.

May 15, 2013 – Have you ever heard the story of Fred Merkle, the New York Giants first baseman whose failure to attend to a simple rule led to professional disaster and even death? His story, oft referred to as The Bonehead Play, is the basis for the June 13 CLE luncheon program State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE® Real Estate and Business Law Institute in Middleton. This CLE program, presented by Duquesne Law School Professor Mark Yochum, tells Merkle’s story and provides guidance on how we deal with errors in others and, inevitably, errors in ourselves. Yochum uses this 1908 event to explore sportsmanship ethics as a model for a legal practice.

Yochum will discuss Rules of Professional Conduct, those rules born particularly of a concern for “zealous advocacy.” He will also address American Bar Association Rules of Professional Conduct 1.3 (Diligence), 1.6 (Confidentiality), 4.1 (Truthfulness to Others), 3.1 (Meritorious Claims), and 3.3 (Candor to the Tribunal).

    About Youchum

Yochum is a nationally recognized speaker on issues of professional responsibility and how they relate to bankruptcy practice. He has presented more than 100 programs nationwide and is also the Themis Bar Review national lecturer for the Multi-state Professional Responsibility Exam.
