State Bar Seeks ABA Delegate, Petitions Due Sept. 26

Sept. 10, 2012 – The State Bar seeks an interim delegate to the American Bar Association (ABA). The nomination petition, which must be signed by 10 members of the State Bar Board of Governors, is due to the State Bar by Sept. 26. The delegate’s term will begin upon appointment and end at the close of the ABA Annual Meeting, August 2013.

Delegate responsibilities include: establishing association policy and defining ABA positions on professional and public issues; electing ABA officers and the Board of Governors after receiving nominations from the ABA Nominating Committee; amending the ABA bylaws and constitution (jointly with ABA Assembly of Members); creating or disbanding association committees and sections; and setting membership dues after conferring with the ABA Board of Governors.

The delegate attends each House meeting, participates in its proceedings, and discharges the House's responsibilities. The delegate also keeps constituencies apprised of House actions and, to the extent possible, of matters pending before the House. The delegate also assists constituent entities in presenting issues of concern for debate and action by the House.

The State Bar Board of Governors annually elects the members to the ABA House of Delegates at its June meeting. For more information, please review the State Bar Bylaws, Article III, Section 11, for election qualifications and procedure.

To receive a petition, visit ABA Delegates or contact Jan Marks at (800) 444-9404, ext. 6106, (608) 250-6106.
