Diversity in the 21st century, become a champion for change at October event

The annual Diversity Counsel Program is one of the most economical CLE events of the year. The Oct. 1, 2010 program will raise awareness of the role the white man plays in diversity, offer strategies that can enhance your law practice, and updates on legal recognition of same-sex relationships, immigration laws, and equal employment law.

Sept. 1, 2010 – Focus on diversity topics currently dominating the legal news at Diversity in the 21st Century: Whether You Lead or Follow, Be a Champion for Change, the 2010 Diversity Counsel Program, on Oct. 1, in Milwaukee, 8 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Following a networking luncheon, keynote speaker Bill Proudman will address the Critical Role of White Men in Diversity and Inclusion Efforts. For many white men, their experience with diversity efforts leaves them feeling isolated and confused. Yet, without white men’s involvement with white women and men and women of color, most diversity initiatives won’t succeed over the long term. This session will raise awareness about the role that white men can take alongside white women and people of color in promoting diversity and inclusion. A national culture-change consultant, Proudman will address assumptions about white men and diversity, examine white male culture and systemic privilege and discuss next steps to creating a culture of full inclusion in the legal profession.

Legal Recognition of Same-Sex Relationships in Wisconsin and the U.S.: Current Issues and Concerns, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Madison attorney Tamara Beth Packard will provide an overview of the current patchwork of relationship recognitions provided to same-sex couples and discuss the unique challenges this patchwork poses for such couples and our nation.

Sesini will offer an overview of current and proposed immigration laws at the state and federal level, including pending ideas for national, comprehensive immigration reform, and the after affect of Arizona’s SB1070 on the national debate.
