Presentations. Many of us undoubtedly dread giving them and, ironically, just as many of us probably dread attending them. The endless slides of bulleted lists. The rapid-fire delivery of information. The unnecessary transitions. And worst of all, the PowerPoint® presentation that works as a script for the presenter.

Attendees go to presentations with hopes of finding nuggets of information to take back and put to work. Often, what they walk away with is vastly different.

To help address some of these offenses, we compiled tips from around the web to help you take your presentation from pitiful to powerful – or at least from lackluster to lively.

Start strong – Kick off with a shocking fact, a surprising insight, or a unique perspective. It draws attention to your core message and helps prepare the audience for where you plan to take them.

Keep it simple – Try not to overload your audience with information, so stick to three main points. Loading your presentation with facts and figures may seem like the way to wow your audience, but it often overwhelms them and leads to boredom. Find your core message and stick to it. If something doesn’t support your core message, don’t include it.

Tell stories – Keep boredom at bay with stories throughout your presentation. These stories should reinforce your core message and help to illustrate the obstacles or solutions you are presenting. This helps your audience relate to and remember your message.

Remember Guy Kawasaki’s 10-20-30 Rule – No more than 10 slides, no more than 20 minutes, and font sizes not less than 30 point.

Connect with your audience and keep it relevant – Be passionate, enthusiastic, and honest – your audience will respond. Always be focused on what the audience needs and wants to know, not what you can tell them.

Move around – Keep your presentation dynamic and involve your audience by getting out from behind the lectern. This adds energy and interest to your presentation. Look people in the eye to help build rapport with your audience.

Simplify your slides – The presentation is what you are talking about. Your slides and props are there to help communicate this information, not provide it on their own. Use strong visuals with data highlighting your main points. And keep the slide backgrounds simple and neutral.

Whether your practice puts you in front of a jury on a regular basis or your focus is more on mediation, clearly presenting your points in way that resonates with your audience plays a big part in your case succeeding.

At the 2017 Annual Meeting & Conference, you’ll find CLE covering key aspects of effective communication. Sessions of interest include:

Dos & Don’ts from the Circuit Court Bench: If you've ever wished you knew what judges are thinking in the courtroom, here’s your chance to find out. Three circuit court judges will share how lawyers can be more persuasive and effective advocates.

Cultural Competence and the Law Practice: Explore why cultural competence matters in the legal profession. Understand how to communicate with and serve those from diverse backgrounds.

The Disappearing Witness in Personal Injury Cases: Burnett vs. Alt protects Wisconsin physicians from giving opinion testimony against their will. Now, more physicians are refusing to testify in injury cases for their patients. Find advice on addressing these situations from plaintiff and defense perspectives.

Where You Stand Depends on Where You Sit: Learn how attorneys can best prepare themselves and their clients for a successful mediation. Assess what mediation styles work best for which types of cases.

Plus, the opening and closing plenary sessions give you the opportunity to see world-class presenters in person.

Ken Goldstein, former UW-Madison professor and one of the country’s top experts on political advertising, is the opening plenary speaker.

Wes Moore, acclaimed author and producer, is the closing plenary presenter. You can follow Wes on <a href="

Answer: Public speaking. That’s according to the 2016 Chapman University Survey of American Fears in which nearly 26% of respondents reported they are afraid or very afraid of making a public address.

If you’re a member of the frightened one in four, what can you do to shake off the jitters? Here are some of our preferred ways to pump up and calm down before giving a presentation.

Dance: Burn up your nervous energy by doing some jumping jacks or by putting in some earbuds, blasting your favorite up-tempo song, and cutting loose. A few of our personal favorites:

“Circus” by Britney Spears

“Future Club” by Peturbator

“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars

“My Shot”* from the musical Hamilton

“Lose Yourself”* by Eminem

Hydrate: Start drinking water 15 to 20 minutes before your presentation to help combat the dreaded dry mouth or scratchy throat. (Don’t forget to make a trip to the little presenter’s room to empty out before you begin speaking.)

Breathe: Take five to ten breaths, listen to the sound of your breath, and try to extend your exhale each time. This can help slow your heart rate. You can even track your progress with apps like Instant Heart Rate on iOS or Android.

Pose: Standing in a powerful posture (think feet wide and hands on hips like a superhero) for as little as two minutes affects your hormones and changes your body chemistry, which can result in higher confidence.

Focus: But not on your speech! Instead, pick a certain color or letter and look around the room to find everything in that color or that starts with that letter. This can distract your mind and help you relax.

Find more advice on fighting fear, hiding your nerves on stage, and befriending your audience in these helpful articles from the public speaking pros.
