Then you’d better make it interesting.

You have a strong point with lots of support. You know your idea/plan/case is a winner. So how do you convince the board/boss/team/judge/jury to see it your way? The answer: solid presentation skills.

No matter where you’re presenting – conference room, boardroom, or courtroom – here are some tips for constructing a more effective presentation from national presenter, author, and sought-after coach Steve Hughes.

Determine the goal of the presentation. In one sentence, you should be able to state what you want the audience to do, think, or feel and why they should want to do, think, or feel that way.

Create a strong opening. You have precious few moments at the start of your presentation to make an impact. Make sure to capture audience interest right away with a surprising fact, picture, anecdote, real-world example, or opening question.

Visual aids should be supporting. When it comes to slide presentations, stick to phrases – not sentences or paragraphs – and leave plenty of white space. You should be filling in that space with what you say. Remember: if all your content is on the slides, there is no need for a presenter.

Don’t end with a Q & A. Contrary to popular practice, the question and answer portion should be second to last. Let the audience know
you have one last important point to go over but first you want to know if there are any questions. If none are asked, share some common questions and their answers to avoid uncomfortable silence.

Save a call to action for the end. To hammer it home, you should end with a strong statement that comes back to the goal of your presentation – what the audience should do, think, or feel.

Fastcase is a leading legal research resource that puts a comprehensive, online national law library and sleek search tools at your disposal. As a State Bar member, you have FREE, unrestricted access to Fastcase. What makes Fastcase such a great research help?

Search your way. Whether you want to search using natural language, use keywords (called a Boolean search), or look up a citation, Fastcase gives you options.

Filter your search results by jurisdiction. Narrow the number of cases you want to see by running a search and then choosing a jurisdiction filter option.

Seminal cases are included. Thanks to a Fastcase tool called Forecite, when you perform a keyword search on Fastcase, Forecite goes the extra mile and identifies seminal cases that can be easily missed by ordinary keyword searches.

Citations are simple. Just highlight the appropriate text, click “Copy Citation,” and get a Bluebook-friendly cite.
