Conquer your next conference

With the Wisconsin Solo & Small Firm Conference (WSSFC) only a week away, it’s the perfect time to review some dos and don’ts for a successful conference experience from HubSpot and TheMuse.com.1

Do determine your goals – While at the conference, will your focus be on networking? Learning? Finding fodder for blog posts? Knowing your priorities can help you decide which sessions and events to attend.

Do get social – Join the conference’s Facebook page or LinkedIn group, find the event’s Twitter hashtag, and start connecting with other attendees. You can join the WSSFC LinkedIn group here. Use the Twitter hashtag #WSSFC2016.

Don’t forget the essentials – Pack your phone, tablet, and laptop chargers where they’re easy to grab as you travel. And be sure to bring enough business cards.

Do keep an eye on the conversation – Monitor social media to see what’s being said about the conference. Join in by tagging your posts correctly. Even use social media to reach out to someone you’re interested in meeting but haven’t seen in person yet.

Don’t skip the social events – Connect with presenters and fellow conference-goers in a more relaxed setting. Take advantage of these opportunities to say hello and get business cards.

Do stay organized – Whether you use an app, a Word doc, or plain old pen and paper, store your notes and materials in chronological order by session. At the end of each session, jot down three key take-aways and any follow up you want to do with the speaker or on the topic. Write reminder notes on the backs of people’s business cards about what you discussed and any important details you learned about them.

Don’t hide – Look up from your smartphone or tablet. Putting away your technology makes you look approachable and improves your chances of striking up a conversation during breaks or while waiting for a session to start.

Do share – After the conference, let co-workers know what you learned by sharing insights with your team via an email, written report, or even a live presentation.

Don’t forget to follow up – Keep the relationships you built during the conference alive. Send invitations to connect on LinkedIn or short, personalized emails.

October 14, 1975

The trial begins for Ronald DeFeo, Jr. accused of killing his parents and four siblings at their home in Amityville, New York. He was later found guilty of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to six concurrent sentences of 25 years to life.

In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved into the house. After just 28 days living there, the Lutzes left the house, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena. Some bizarre experiences said to have happened in the house included:

The house was plagued by swarms of flies despite the winter weather.

Locks, doors, and windows in the house were damaged by an unseen force.

Green gelatin-like slime oozed from walls in the hall, and also from the keyhole of the playroom door in the attic.

The incident inspired the book The Amityville Horror as well as several films.
