5 Ways to Jump Start your Business Development Strategy

A recent Above the Law post shared results of a survey of solo and small-firm attorneys by Thomson Reuters. When asked to identify their most significant challenge, nearly 30% of lawyers said “Acquiring new client business.” Business development doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Spend time on your website. For at least 80% of potential clients, your website is their first impression of you. Make sure it’s easy to navigate, current, and accurate. Nothing deters a client more than reading about your attention to detail and then finding numerous typos. Your site should also be easily accessible, so make it mobile friendly.

Improve your online search results and visitor engagement. Add high quality content REGULARLY to your website. Your website’s text is the most important element in improving search result standings and conveying your expertise. Use elements like videos, graphics, and white papers to engage visitors on your site.

Start with people you already know. It’s much easier to increase services to existing clients than it is to attract new ones. Get to know your clients’ unmet legal needs through simple, regular contact by phone or email. Or, get more involved by taking them to lunch.

Nurture your referral sources.
The best sources for referrals are satisfied clients. Let them know you’re interested in helping their friends and colleagues with similar legal needs. In addition, develop a professional referral network – accountants, real estate agents, and investment brokers are all people who can send you new business, and you can do the same in return.

Join a trade association. Join an association where your potential clients are members, and you’ll be in front of prospects at every meeting. Need ideas? Ask your current clients what groups they’re active in. But don’t just join – get noticed by being active.
