The State Bar of Wisconsin commits to assisting legal organizations interested in diversifying their legal staff. To further its goal of promoting diversity within the legal profession, it facilitates a diversity clerkship program that encourages diversity in the legal profession by providing a rich learning experience for participating students and employers. In the past thirteen years, the program has provided first-hand experience in private law firms, corporate legal departments, and governmental agencies.
The State Bar’s first-year law student Diversity Clerkship Program is an employer-student matching program. Participating students and employers are matched. Student clerks gain valuable legal experience; employers obtain valuable legal support. The program offers employers and students a unique opportunity to share experiences and to promote diversity in the legal profession.
“The Diversity Clerkship Program assists Wisconsin businesses, law firms, and governmental agencies interested in diversifying their legal staff, says Program Chair Roger Flores. “This unique program provides legal employers with access to first-year law students of diverse backgrounds from Wisconsin law schools. The program also provides first-year law students with a limited opportunity to gain real-life work experience in varied legal fields within Wisconsin. The program is a win-win situation for both employers and students.”
