    National Pro Bono Celebration

    In celebration of the annual National Pro Bono Celebration, L.A.W. would like to recognize the following individuals who volunteered 30 or more hours of pro bono services this year:

    Cara Coburn Faris: Cara performed over 100 hours of pro bono service as a volunteer for Midwest Environmental Advocates.

    Susan Parsons: Susan spent over 30 hours performing real estate and tax related services on a pro bono basis for the AIDS Network.

    Saejung Lee: Saejung performed over 30 hours of pro bono service as a volunteer attorney at Legal Action, where she assisted a 62 year old Vietnamese woman with her request for waiver of an SSDI overpayment.

    Carmen Rumbaut: Carmen volunteered over 30 hours through a number of activities, including the Family Law Assistance Clinic of the Dane County Bar Association, the Dane County Bar Association's Case Mediation Program, and the Volunteer Lawyers Project.

    Carrie Benedon: Carrie provided legal services on a pro bono basis to a disabled man who was facing eviction from his low income housing. Thanks to Carrie's efforts, the man will now be permitted to remain in his home.

    2010 Marygold Melli Achievement Award Nominations

    The Marygold Melli Achievement Award was established in 1994 by the Legal Association for Women, Madison, Wisconsin. Each year it recognizes and celebrates an outstanding individual in Wisconsin who has made substantial contributions to the interests of women in the law, has achieved professional excellence and has contributed significantly to the eradication of gender bias in the legal system. The award honors Marygold Shire Melli, Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin Law School, a distinguished teacher, prolific scholar, parent of four children and contributor to her profession and her community.

    The award recognizes a a person of professional excellence who has made significant contributions to women in the law by:
    · advancing the interests of women members of the legal profession;
    · promoting improvements in the administration of justice;
    · promoting equality and social justice for all people;
    · promoting the rights of women in society; and
    · improving relations between the legal profession and the public.

    Past recipients of the award include Marsha M. Mansfield, Betsy Abramson, Prof. Carin Clauss, Hon. Angela Bartell, Hon. Burneatta Bridge, Eunice Gibson, Pamela Barker & Susan Steingass, Prof. Louise Trubek, Prof. June Weisberger, Dianne Greenley, Hon. Barbara Crabb, Hon. Shirley Abrahamson, Mary Lou Munts, and Ruth Doyle

    L.A.W. is now accepting nominations for this prestigious award. The official nomination form can be found here. Nomination materials are due by December 1, 2009.

    L.A.W. Board Elections

    At the December luncheon we'll be holding elections for next year's L.A.W. Board.

    The President-Elect position is up for grabs, and we encourage people with ideas on how to improve and expand L.A.W. to run. The President-Elect will participate in 2010 board activities and then assume the President position in 2011.

    We have incumbents running for Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity, Newsletter, and Special Events.

    If you're interested in a position, we encourage you to contact Cara or the board member who currently holds that position to discuss what the position entails.

    Meet and Mingle, A Success!

    Thank you to all who attended L.A.W.'s 8th Annual Meet and Mingle event on September 23, 2009. The Meet and Mingle is a wonderful networking opportunity for our members and this year's event was no exception. In particular, L.A.W. would like to thank Axley Brynelson, LLP, Lathrop & Clark, LLP, and Murphy Desmond, S.C. for their generous contributions which helped to make this year's event a great success!

    At our December luncheon, UW Law Professor Ben Kempinen will speak on ethical issues related to electronic media and communications. L.A.W. will be applying for one ethics credit for this program.
