Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory

The State Bar of Wisconsin appreciates the volunteer spirit shown by the approximately 500 lawyers listed in the Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory. These lawyers have agreed to share their knowledge in particular areas of law with other lawyers - not the public - through brief telephone consultations. They are helping to create a network among attorneys that can lead to greater competence within the profession and better delivery of legal services to the public.

The Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory is revised every two years. It allows lawyers to readily identify other lawyers who not only have background and experience in specific areas of law but who also are willing to share their knowledge. That sharing is accomplished by the "experienced" lawyer's agreement to be listed in the directory. By virtue of her or his listing, each lawyer agrees to conduct brief telephone consultations free of charge.

These consultations - generally of about 10 minutes - involve questions lawyers may have in the category for which the lawyer is listed. Sometimes, the directory is used to locate lawyers who are State Bar of Wisconsin members but who practice in other states. The "Out-of-State Listing" facilitates finding lawyers in other states.

Etiquette

Long-time directory volunteers suggest callers may find these tips helpful:

  • Do not call collect. If you are calling long distance and must leave a message, permit the volunteer to return your call collect.
  • Identify yourself.
  • Be upfront about the nature of the call and that you are calling from a directory listing.
  • Respect the volunteer's time. Limit calls to 10 or fewer minutes. If the call cannot be completed in fewer than 10 minutes, at the volunteer's discretion, callers may arrange for a longer consultation.
  • It is inappropriate for callers to seek legal advice for themselves as clients.
  • Good questions to ask of volunteers are: Am I over my head? Is this issue more complex than my knowledge of the area indicates? Do I need to refer the client to someone experienced in this area?

Please remember that etiquette counts. The attorneys listed here have graciously volunteered up to 10 minutes of their time to assist their colleagues. Callers, please do not abuse volunteer generosity by overstepping the intent of this directory.

Next update

The Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory is updated in the fall of odd-numbered years for publication the Wisconsin Lawyer Directory, which is published annually in January. A link to a registration form is included in the August and September issues of WisBar InsideTrack. To join this group of attorneys, you can download a fillable PDF registration form that can be completed electronically or a print-only version of the form.

How to use the Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory

The Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory includes a Topical Listing, an Out-of-State Listing and an Alphabetical Listing.

If your primary aim is to find a lawyer to talk with about a specific legal issue, turn to the front of the Topical Listing and follow the directions for using that section.

If you are interested in where a lawyer practices as well as her or his area of experience, there are two approaches. You can use the Out-of-State Listing and follow the directions given there. Or, you can use the Topical Listing to ?nd the appropriate area of legal practice and then refer to the information given about the lawyer's location.

If you want to find the major categories for which a lawyer is listed in this directory, consult the Alphabetical Listing. This section also tells you when the lawyer was first admitted to practice, states besides Wisconsin in which he or she is admitted to practice, and the law school from which the lawyer was graduated.

Important Caveat

The State Bar of Wisconsin makes no representation as to the knowledge or experience of any lawyer listed in this directory. The lawyers listed here have agreed to refrain from referring to the directory listing in advertising or other communications to the public because of the potential for misleading the public regarding the State Bar of Wisconsin's assessment of their level of competence.

This is not a public referral guide. This directory is published as an aid to lawyers representing their clients and not as a referral guide for the public.
