Teach students how to develop public policies

Project Citizen is a hands-on civic education program for upper elementary, middle school, and high school students designed to actively engage young people in the civic life of their community.  The students identify and study a problem in their school or community.  They research the problem, propose a solution, and develop an action plan for solving the problem.  Students prepare a portfolio and present it to a panel of evaluators.  They also have the opportunity to enter their portfolio in the State Showcase held at the Wisconsin State Bar and the State Capitol in May.  Project Citizen directly correlates with the Wisconsin State Standards for social studies and language arts.

As a class project, students work together to:

  • Identify and study a public policy issue
  • Evaluate options
  • Select a solution to the problem
  • Develop an action plan to solve the problem
