Don’t miss this interactive institute that puts you in contact with your own Wisconsin justices and judges!

Attend the Judicial Teaching Institute, held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Supreme Court for valuable knowledge you can use immediately in your classroom. There’s no better way to learn about the court system than right from the sources in this intimate learning environment.

In two and a half fun, information-packed days, you will:

  • Learn about the ins and outs of the court system
  • Meet and hear from Wisconsin justices and judges, including Wisconsin Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson
  • Experience firsthand how the court systems work and the roles of the different players involved, including the justices, judges, the lawyer, and members of the media
  • Review real petitions, deliver a sentence on a case, and even participate in mock trials

Registration will be open soon. Don’t forget, this classroom is limited to 30 teachers. You’ll even be reimbursed for $200 to help cover costs!


Judicial Teaching Institute Details

What you will learn:

  • How cases are presented and decided before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and how those decisions affect our everyday life
  • What it’s like to be a Supreme Court justice, by hearing straight from the Chief Justice about life on the Court
  • The difference between a municipal court and a circuit court
  • The toughest part of the trial judge’s job: sentencing
  • How the Supreme Court sifts through the 1,000 petitions filed each year to choose the approximately 100 cases it will hear

Featured Presenters: Justices of the Wisconsin Supreme Court and University of Wisconsin - Madison Professor Diana Hess will be featured presenters.

Where: U-W School of Education, 225 North Mills Street, Madison, WI .  A block of rooms has been reserved at the Doubletree Hotel, 525 W. Johnson, Madison, at a rate of $129.  Please reserve your rooms on your own.  Indicate the block of rooms held by the State Bar.  Reservations must be made by September 28, to receive the Institute rate of $129.
