Judicial Teaching Institute Details

What you will learn:

• How cases are presented and decided before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and how those decisions affect our everyday life
• What it’s like to be a Supreme Court justice, by hearing straight from the Chief Justice about life on the Court
• The difference between a municipal court and a circuit court
• The toughest part of the trial judge’s job: sentencing
• How the Supreme Court sifts through the 1,000 petitions filed each year to choose the approximately 100 cases it will hear

Featured Presenters:
Justices of the Wisconsin Supreme Court and University of Wisconsin - Madison Professor Diana Hess will be featured presenters. Additional presenters include attorneys, teachers, and circuit court, and municipal court judges from around the state.

Note: A block of rooms is being held at the La Quinta Inn, Madison. Please make your reservations on your own. Indicate the rooms are being held for the State Bar of Wisconsin. Reservations must be made by September 24, 2009, to receive the Institute rate of $89.

When:
Thursday, October 8, 2009 – beginning at 12:30 p.m. through Saturday, October 10, 2009 – ending at 3:30 p.m. (Teachers must commit to attend the entire conference to be eligible.)

Cost:
A registration fee of $50 is required. Participants will be reimbursed $200 upon completion of the Institute. Participants must attend the entire Institute to receive reimbursement. Reimbursement can be used to cover the cost of lodging, mileage, substitute teacher pay, etc.
