Fact: Foreign-born residents in Wisconsin have more than doubled since 1990.
The population of foreign-born residents in Wisconsin has grown by 101% since 1990, reaching more than 245,000 in 2006. Of this population, 61.5% are married, and nearly 8% are divorced or separated.

With such a rapid increase in population in such a short time, there are legal issues that are evolving that are new to the Wisconsin legal system. This is especially true in family law – which can affect issues across a wide spectrum of legal topics – from abduction to adoption, from divorce to domestic violence, and from sponsorship of a spouse to deportation – each situation can have its own distinctive characteristics.

The question for you is how to navigate these uncharted waters?

For the first time ever in Wisconsin... Immigration in the Family Law Context!
Attend this seminar to gain a solid foundation on the basics of immigration law. Then take this understanding and build upon it as you move into more and more complex (and increasingly common) matters that may be exclusive to family law cases that include foreign-born residents.

Topics to be covered in the program include:

  • Introduction to Immigration Law
  • Family Sponsorship
  • Children and Immigration Law (including special protections)
  • Domestic Violence and the Immigrant

You’ll be able to answer complex questions like...

  • What is an affidavit of support?
  • What happens if your client’s sponsor is their spouse, and they get divorced ...can he or she be deported?
  • What special protections are in place for abused spouses and children?
  • What effect does it have on the drafting of a pre-nuptial agreement if the fiancé is going to be sponsored for a green card by the intended spouse?
  • What is the process for adopting foreign-born children, including those who entered the country illegally?
  • What does my legal permanent resident client need to know about the consequences of domestic violence convictions, failure to provide child support, and child abduction?
  • And hundreds of other questions!

Family law issues have additional facets when you add a foreign-born party to the case. This program, the first of its kind in Wisconsin, will help you to understand and represent foreign-born clients in family law cases. It will give you a solid understanding of the issues and help you to find your way through this old area of law with a new twist.

Register today for this program addressing the unique issues faced in family law cases involving foreign-born parties.
