New multijurisdictional practice rule effective Jan. 1

The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s final order pertaining to the temporary practice of law by lawyers not licensed to practice in Wisconsin, as well as changes to the rules governing admission pro hac vice, is effective Jan. 1, 2009. The rule is in response to State Bar petition 06-06, filed in November of 2006.

The new SCR 10.03 (4) creates a simple registration process that applies to corporation, association, or other nongovernmental entity in-house counsel not licensed to practice in Wisconsin. The registration deadline is within 90 days of the amendment’s effective date or within 60 days after commencement of employment. The two-page registration form includes a one-time $250 fee payable to the Board of Bar Examiners. After five years of practice in Wisconsin, attorneys may apply for reciprocity for admission to the State Bar of Wisconsin.

State Bar members are encouraged to share this information with in-house counsel who are not licensed to practice in Wisconsin.
